I have been in Morelia Michoacan for a total of one week. I am living in a house with at times, 20 other volunteers who are stationed in pueblitos throughout the state. I am older than all the volunteers and almost immediately assumed the role as la mami de la casa. Many are from Germany, recently graduated from high school and participating in a service program through the Germany government similar to the Peacecorps. I made some great friends already: Nora from Germany, Daniel from Poland, Simon from Denmark and Jesus from Morelia. Today is really the first day I have to myself, all the other volunteers have returned to their villages and now Jesus and I and the cockroaches are all that remain. It is a welcome break . I have been doing yoga in the morning to balance out the crazy energy of the house and my stomach has been serving me well.
Some of you may have ready about this but just in case you havent, it is important that you are aware. Sept 15 and 16 are the biggest holidays in Mexico celebrating Independence dia de las patrias. On the 15th, everyone gathers in downtown Morelia at 10 pm to celebrate and yell ¨Viva Mexico¨at midnight. The current Mexico president Felipe Calderon hails from Morelia and was present at the celebration to address the crowd. Just as he was doing so, someone tossed a grenade into the crowd injuring 100 and killing 5-7.... we were very close to the explosion and felt the shutter and shock throughout our bodies. No one was hurt but it was an shocking eye-opener catapulting the reality of living in a society that seems to be preparing for another revolution. It was talking with Jesus about this and he mention the fact that every two hundred years in Mexico there has been a revolutionary event, first the Independence, the the Revolution in 1810 and now we are approaching 2010 and politicos are predicting another radical change, this is just one sign of such possibilities. It is not clear at this time who launched the bomb but there has bee a tremendous amount of violence between Narcotraffickers and the government.
Luckily I will be heading down to the turtle preservation on Sunday where I will have scorpions and mosquitos as my biggest concern.
I am still trying figure out how to upload my photos and as soon as I do you will have them as your service.

I saw the Morelia grenades on the news...and immediately worried for your safely. I am glad you are ok! Viva la Mexico!
Hi Britt,
I just saw your picture on the Chicago Tribune's website re: Chicago's greenest people. When I saw your picture, I just thought "I love her." (So now everyone reading the blog knows I love Britt, oh well.)
Hi Love,
I am amazed and proud of your commitment and focus. Your continual work with indigenous people and improve the environment continues to inspire me. The Buddha would be so proud in that you have not only found your own light, but live it daily.
Stay safe, slather your body in tea tree oil...might keep the scorpions away. You are with me daily in my thoughts and prayers. Fulbright scholarship here she comes...love, mom
My long lost sister! How is Mexico? I hear you're living on the beach? If there's one thing i'm sure of, you'll be making the absolute most out of this experience. I was able to share your trip with friends (Jayson Miller, Bryan Rotunno and friends....) and they were simply amazed. ALso, Jen googled your name, and guess what, you're FAMOUS! We found some crazed youtube video that you participated in, "Every breath you take" playing in the background. After being confused at first, i ended up enjoying the video's climax. CAN'T WAIT TO SEE YOU SOON!
Love,
Brother Willis
I had posted this earlier but forgot the time difference so let's try this again and hope it's midnight or later lol...
HAPPY BIRTHDAY MY SIS.
Love ya!
Take care of yourself.
HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO YOU, HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO YOU. HAPPY BIIIIIIRRRRTTTTTTTHHHHHHHHDDDDDDDAAAAAAAAAAAAAYYYYYYYY Dear Britty, Happy BIRTHDAY TO YOU!
Wow, grenades?? I'm glad you're okay. Did Jesus mention anything about the Mayan Calendar and what's going to happen in 2012???
Just wanted to say keep up the good work and that I hope there is a daily sense of satisfaction knowing that you are doing what every person wishes they had the courage, guts, or balls to do. I'll be looking for updates on how you're doing and can't wait to hear how the project is going. Be well.
Jayson
Hey Britt! Sounds like you are having quite the adventure! Your passion for helping others is truly an inspiration for all of us. What are you missing in Chitown?? Nothing new, same old election bs and weekend shootings! Take in every second of your experience, you will treasure it forever!
happy birthday amiga! is this a golden year for you, cannot recall but think it just might be! it is cold in africa but the landscape has been dotted with mexican aloes (of all things), lots of dry bush and even the rare tortoise in the road. I think of you so often! love you like feathers and spores xxoo
It IS your golden birthday...29 on the 29th! Ah yes, I remember the day well. Gave birth "au naturale" and the doctor and residents, (ten of them!) were all amazed at the health of the placenta that fed you! I know I am grossing most people out, but what a wonder indeed, when Britty was born! And the amazement continues!
Love ya much
mamasita
